Your Hospital Parking taken away for absent bicycles

If you have trouble parking your vehicle at Cottage Hospital, then ask why so much street and garage parking has been removed for bikes. Although much money has been spent on bike paths and accommodations, Santa Barbara has followed a 35-year pattern in North America of declining bicycle use for commuters. No matter how much the local government and their "community oversight groups" paint the south county as being unique and "different", it is true that bicycle use in SB is way down from 1973 numbers.

These are photos of the new Cottage Hospital Parking Garage, with much of the closest area to the hospital being taken up by an almost empty bicycle parking garage. These photos were taken mid-day on a warm, sunny Tuesday, when it was difficult to find a parking space for a car.

If the interior wall did not have windows, racks could have been placed on the wall, and fewer auto spaces would have to be sacrificed for the bicycle parking. Just imagine how tough it will be to find a car parking space when the huge, new hospital opens.
