Some employees report problems with vehicles months or years before they are repaired, or until the truck skids into traffic and is totalled. This truck rolled down the La Cumbre On Ramp and hit 5 vehicles. The mechanic had recommended tire replacement weeks before the accident, but the supervisors officially stated that it was driver error.


Several local Caltrans employees don't own personal vehicles. One employee drives his State truck home daily to Santa Maria, and another one drives his home daily about 140 miles round trip to Simi Valley, so these vehicles get some use on and off the job.
